Types of Heavy Equipment used in the Construction Industry
The construction industry is occupied with the heaviest task that seems impossible without heavy equipment. The heavy-duty machinery is designed to lessen the burden on humans and make their work a little easier and faster.
Equipment is actually a set of different tools that perform the really hard jobs on a work site. The Machine operates on mechanical power and needs an engine and fuel supply to run smoothly. The heavy equipment makes the construction work easier by their mechanical power. The heaviest task such as digging the ground, lifting the heavy objects and moving them to height, excavating and leveling of ground, and crushing hard rocks require a lot of time and human labor. Therefore, performing these hard tasks with the help of machinery will take less time and human effort.
On a construction site, one can see a lot of heavy equipment but sometimes, people are unsure about their particular uses and names. Before starting any construction business, whether it’s construction contractors or the Industrial equipment supply, you should be aware of the heavy equipment that is in the industry for different purposes.
In this article, you will know all the necessary details about the important construction equipment.
There are different categories of heavy-duty equipment that we see as:
- Earth Moving Equipment
- Construction Equipment
- Material Handling Equipment
Earth Moving Equipment
Excavators in the industry serve many purposes and are the most common machine you will see on-site. It operates on hydraulic systems for their mechanical functions. They are mostly present on site to excavate the ground, digging trenches, cutting the trees, demolition, and sometimes lifting heavy objects. Excavators have these three parts:
- the undercarriage (having tracks and blades)
- the house (having an engine, fuel tank, and a 360° rotating cab)
- the arm (provides up and down movement).
You must have seen another excavator type of machine on-site. It is also om site for different purposes but most importantly, it is there for digging the ground. It has its name Backhoe because a hoe connects to the backside of the machine whereas the front side has a loading bucket. The machine works with a two-part arm. The boom is closer to the vehicle.
Loaders perform the task of lifting and dumping heavy objects. They also run on the hydraulic system. A loader has a larger bucket that connects with a shorter arm in front and is most of the time what helps to carry the demolition wastes, raw material, excavation of soils, etc. Loaders can have wheels and tracks that perform the job according to the nature of the site.
Another equipment that many use is a bulldozer on a construction site, mostly people use it to excavate the upper layer of soil up to a certain depth. Different kinds of attachments are there for a particular task. A sharp-edge tooth can be helpful to remove the soil layers that can move accordingly. Some other tasks that a bulldozer also performs are road carving, ground leveling, deforestation, earthmoving, etc. Bulldozers are available in many sizes and types and you can choose one according to the nature of the work.
Graders/Motor graders/road graders are mostly seen in the construction of roads to achieve the high precision of ground leveling. Their basic function is to level the ground after excavation or use of a bulldozer. Graders have adjustable blades that can be adjusted up to the required height and angles. It can be attached with different attachments such as ripper, compactor, and scarifier. The three different axles of graders are designed to carry the steering wheel, cab, and engine.
Trenching machines are widely common for making ditches in the ground for installing pipelines, cables, and drainage systems. Trenches are best for excavating the soil. They are of two types; wheel and chain trenches. Chain trenchers have a long but fixed arm surrounded by the chain for digging, whereas the wheel trenchers are have a digging tooth on a metal wheel which is best for digging the hard soil. You can choose these trenches according to the requirement of work and Jobsite.
1. Concrete Mixer
A machine, attached to a rotating drum, is used to mix and then transport the large quantity of concrete mixture in less time. The manual mixing of concrete with cement and water may take a lot of time but this equipment can make your work easier and faster by doing it mechanically. Different kinds of concrete mixers are available in the market that can be chosen according to the nature of the work.
During the transport of the concrete, the drum keeps moving to keep the concrete wet and prevent moisture loss from it.
A compactor is a very helpful machine that makes it easier to compress the soil and carry out the work smoothly. They are of different kinds depending on the types of plate compactors. They can also be used to compress and crush the material after land-filling.
3. Road Rollers
After using the compactors on site, road rollers are then used to make the road surface more suppressed on the spots left by the compactors. It has a drum attached with it which runs on the road and provides pressure to make it leveled.
Material Handling Equipment
On a construction site, a lot of heavy materials have to be transported at a height that needs a lot of human effort but a crane can be used to make it easier. Cranes are encumbered with ropes, chains, and elevators that can be adjusted accordingly. They can carry the objects in both directions, be it vertical or horizontal. The arm of the cranes is capable enough to carry the heaviest objects whereas the high quality of rope makes it sure to prevent the objects from falling and keep them holding.
On rough construction sites, if any material has to be moved, a forklift can be the best option. They are also used to transport heavy objects from the warehouse to the place where needed. Secondly, you can easily move on the rough terrain surface with it and cover a long distance. Lastly, the equipment can be used in the replacement of cranes as they can easily lift the object up to a certain height as well.
During the construction of a multistory building, a hoist can carry the workers and materials on different floors like a crane. Hoists are more like an elevator having one or two cages to hold the object that has to be above ground.
On construction sites, heavy equipment can make the work easier and faster. By using heavy equipment one can reduce the need for human labor. There are different kinds of heavy equipment working on-site. You should be aware of all the heavy machinery regardless of your business, whether you are involved in construction management or Industrial equipment supply. Go through the article and make yourself mindful enough about the most common and widely used equipment.
